“A mind that is stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions.”
— Oliver Wendell Holmes
I grew up in a small town in Colorado working along with my siblings in our family business. My mother and father owned a small, independent grocery store so from the age of 8, I was stocking shelves, bagging groceries and mopping the aisles each evening. I was the first person in my family ever to attend college and was overwhelmed by the experience of arriving at the University of Colorado Business School and sitting in a class with 500 other students (bigger than my entire high school). During my time in college, I fell in love with the idea of working with children—investing my abilities in “people” rather than business. My first job was to teach Business Law and History at Delta High School where I coached football, basketball, and baseball every year. I soon was asked to be a middle school Assistant Principal, then an Elementary School Principal shortly thereafter. My 6 years working with elementary aged children was an incredible experience and we developed a “Children’s Discovery Center” at our school. I was then asked to become the Assistant Superintendent for the school district serving about 6,500 students. After 7 years, I became a Superintendent near my home town of Colorado Springs. I have two adult children—Tim who is an attorney working with the Attorney Generals of Utah and Montana and Kristi, who works with the Idaho Department of Education in the ISAT testing department. I have been working with students for 33 years and love each opportunity to be involved in their lives every day. I love to be outside every day and active. You will find me wading through a stream, hacking up grass on the golf course, or skiing fresh powder when I am not at school.
