PHYSICAL SCIENCE Grade 9 - 12
This course fulfills the Physical Science graduation requirements. It covers the basic physical science principles of chemistry, study of forces and laws of nature affecting matter, energy, motion, waves, sound, light, electricity, and magnetism, along with a look at the solar system. Basic science skills such as use of the lab, lab equipment, lab safety, lab write-ups, measurement, graphing and written communication of scientific ideas will be stressed. Simple math application to science is also emphasized.
BIOLOGY Grades 9 -12
Prerequisite: For entering 9th graders: 8TH grade teacher recommendation and qualifying grades in middle school math, science and English. Completion or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 1. This is a one-year comprehensive biology course. Through a variety of activities (written and laboratory work, lectures and discussions, group research, and computer simulations), students will gain an understanding of the major biological concepts: the nature and scope of biology, experimental design, biochemistry, cell structure and function, microscopy, genetics, DNA, biotechnology, evolution, human physiology, plant physiology, and ecology. The course meets the state and district content standards for biology/life science.
INTEGRATED SCIENCE Grades 11-12
This course uses the inquiry approach, which utilizes discussion, lecture, laboratory experiments and demonstrations. It covers the unifying concepts and real-life examples across physics, chemistry, earth science, biology, and astronomy including stars, the solar system and space exploration. It is about science, describing motion, Newton's laws of motion, energy and momentum, gravity, the atom, nuclear physics, investigating matter, the basic unit of life-the cell, human biology, ecosystems and environment, plate tectonics, earth's surfaces and processes, earth's waters and weather, the solar system and the universe.
HEALTH
Health Education offers the student the opportunity to learn about personal growth and care of the body which will be of value to them throughout their lifetime. The course is divided into three blocks of instructional content: Mental and Emotional Wellness, Physical Wellness, and Risk Awareness and Prevention. Students will acquire the skills to lead a healthy life and reduce health risks. They will learn to evaluate and apply health information practices and services appropriate for individual needs. The Health Education curriculum follows the State Health Education standards.
CHEMISTRY:
This course is designed for juniors and seniors. Study of the elements and the periodic table include an in depth look at the structure of the atom and methods of chemical bonding. Chemical reactions and energy changes are included. Application of chemistry in the arts, such and paints, solvents, and medium is highlighted when appropriate.
