Mission and Purpose (from petition summary):

Idaho Arts Charter School’s mission is to develop students with the academic achievements, skills, and attitudes necessary to succeed in elementary, middle and secondary school, and to be offered a post-secondary education and satisfying employment.

Additionally, the school seeks to inspire students and develop artistic talents, attitudes and skills in students, promoting lifelong avocation in arts areas. The school seeks to develop an educated citizenry for the 21st century through academic programs, centered around a diverse arts curriculum, using focused investigations.

Instruction will be well grounded in Idaho Standards including the basics of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies, and will develop the habits of lifelong learning, curiosity, clear oral and written communication, creative thinking, effective use of technology as a tool, adaptability to new situations and new information, and problem-solving skills. Students will gain these skills and abilities through a curriculum based heavily in music, drama, visual arts and dance.

Students will develop personal habits and attitudes that lead to accepting responsibility for personal decisions and actions; academic honesty and the ability to face challenges with courage and integrity; a healthy lifestyle; empathy and courtesy for others; respect for differences among people and cultures; self-confidence and willingness to risk setbacks in order to learn; and the ability to work cooperatively with others.

Educational Philosophy (from petition):

The philosophy of the Idaho Arts Charter School is grounded in the belief that if provided with a healthy, safe, and encouraging environment, all students can and want to learn.

Idaho Arts Charter School’s philosophy is that learning is maximized when:

  • focused investigations are implemented across the curriculum;
  • compelling projects are designed and guiding questions are asked;
  • fieldwork, local expertise and service learning are incorporated;
  • high quality student work is produced and presented;
  • effective instructional practices are used school wide;
  • reading and writing are taught across the disciplines in K-12;
  • inquiry-based mathematics and science are taught;
  • learning is done in and through the arts;
  • a school culture is built and character is fostered;
  • a professional community is developed;
  • families are engaged in the life of the school; and
  • time is designed for student and adult learning.

Students, parents, and teachers will experience peace of mind in the Idaho Arts Charter School setting because of a commitment to the concept that each child has the right to attend school in an environment that fosters learning.

Each parent has the right to expect a school to provide a healthy and nurturing environment for their child.  Each staff member has the right to teach in a respectful environment.

We are committed to teach students respect for all people regardless of age, gender, color, race, nationality or religious affiliation.  Respect as a value, we believe, can be taught, not by fear or intimidation; but by sound and fair discipline as well as by example.  Disrespect by anyone toward any other person or anything will not be tolerated.

School Board President - Kelly Howe

Kelly Howe My name is Kelly Howe and I am currently serving as the Idaho Arts Charter School board president. My wife (Renée) will have been married 20 years this May. My family and I have been involved with IACS since its inception; we currently have four children attending the school, two second graders (Miles and Mallory), a freshman (Erin) and a senior (Chenin). Chenin will be in the second graduating class from IACS, a concept hard to visualize when we first began over four years ago. I currently work for Applied Materials (for the last eleven years) and before that I was a member of the United States Navy (Submarines) for an additional twelve years. It is my privilege and honor to serve on the school board. I have two additional years left on my term, and I plan on putting them to good use. School Board Vice President - David Pyper

I am 46 years old this month, married to a very talented and beautify wife, Janise Lynn. We have four wonderful children, two of whom will attend IACS in fall of 2009, namely Shauntal, a 17 yr old Junior, and Joseph a 7 yr old First Grader. Our second oldest son Jared just finished his senior year, his fourth year at IACS since it opening. Our oldest son Stephen lives in Boise, pursuing a college degree and working full time. We have lived through out the Boise area since 1998. Currently we reside in South Nampa.

With an educational background in engineering, I have worked over the last 15 years for manufacturing companies designing many types of industrial equipment from robotic material handling equipment, to oil well drilling tools to fire trucks along with setting up information sharing systems and computer aided design systems. Currently, I work for the Idaho Military DIV Construction and Facility Management Office as an engineer and project manager. I am responsible for coordinating and managing the process of other engineers and architects to design and construct a wide range of military facilities. Our customer is the Idaho Army National Guard of which I am a member. I am active in the ID Army National Guard and have deployed to Iraq with the 116th HBCT in 2005 for a year as a staff officer.

I stated serving as an appointed member to the IACS board in March 2007. Based on my professional background, I was assigned to help on the construction committee for the new school. I have served as a genera board member, secretary, and now Vice board president. I have strong interests in seeing IACS succeed, one for the benefit of my children, two for the benefit of the local community, and three because I too have a great love of the arts. I sing in choirs, play the piano, guitar, and can still pickup the violin and play a tune or two (I had 7 years orchestral training in Jr. MS & HS, with some pre-college musical productions as well). As a concerned parent, a passionate professional and a committed citizen solider, I bring to the table many relevant life and career experiences that will enable me to continue to make significant contributions as an IACS board member in assisting the school to accomplish its goals.

School Board Treasurer - Jodi Daugherty

Jodi Daugherty

My name is Jodi Daugherty and I am serving as the IACS Board Treasurer. I have been a resident of Nampa for the past eighteen years. My husband Chris and I have been married 15 years and have three girls: Mikaela, Ashton, and Cassidy. I have worked as a CPA at a regional firm in Boise for 14 years.

I am excited to watch my girls thrive in the environment created by the wonderful elementary school teachers. Mikaela was a kindergartner the year IACS opened and her class will be the first to go all the way through IACS. I try to stay very involved in what is happening at IACS and serving on the Board is one of many ways to fulfill that goal. We have a great Board and great administration and I am enjoying working with each one of them.
