Idaho Arts Charter School
Karie Yost - 1st/2nd Grade Teacher
Howdy All! I am Karie Yost and I teach 1st/2nd grade. This will be my 2nd year at IACS. This is the best job in the world! I turn my teacher friends green with envy when I tell them that I don't teach from a curriculum with a script, instead I get to integrate drama, art, dance and music into my teaching. On top of that, we teach using Scottish Storyline. This means that the kids get to create a situation, place, characters, problems, solutions, etc. and live it out as if it is real. What a learning experience this is! Not only do I recognize how lucky I am to teach here, but I also feel very blessed to have my children attending school here as well.
Before coming to IACS, I taught in Homedale for 8 years. I started my adventurous teaching career as an extended resource room teacher. After becoming a mom, I moved into 3rd grade and then to 4th grade. When little one #2 came along, I hung up my school- bus-teacher sweater and became a full-time CEO of my household (AKA full-time diaper duty).
I loved being at home. Doing large amounts of laundry, cleaning up spills, dancing to Barney and making friends with the Teletubbies was so rewarding. But with the cost of bon-bons on the rise, I had to adventure back to work.
It was all of God's perfect timing that my baby would be starting full-time kindergarten and a teaching position was opening up. So here I am. I love my job!! The staff, students, and parents of IACS are all the cherries on top.
I like to brag about my wonderful family. First, there is my husband, Mike. We have been married for 11 years. He is very happily married!! (No matter what he says.) We have 2 girls. Karsyn is a 4th grader and Kendal is a 1st grader. We have an adorable American Bulldog named Guinness. Our favorite times together are game nights, 4 wheeling, walking, swimming, going to McCall and going out for ice cream.
Let me go back a moment and tell you that I am a proud Boise State graduate. I received my BA in education with an endorsement in special ed. Since starting back to teaching last year I have enjoyed taking lots of art integration classes. Some of those classes include Arts Powered Schools, Drama in the Classroom, Integrating literature with dance, and Art Beyond the Classroom. I also attended the National Charter School Convention in New Orleans this year!!
I look forward to a great year with wonderful students, super parents, and a fabulous new school!
